Synopsis of my Life

Born in December 1931, I grew up and went to school in St. Louis, Missouri. After two years in the United States Army, 1953-55, as a radar repairman for the Signal Corp, I attended Washington University in St. Louis, where I received my Masters Degree in philosophy in 1957. Having just married, I moved to Los Angeles, where I was a teaching assistant for the Philosophy Department at UCLA. While still working on my Ph.D. dissertation, I was hired in 1964 to teach philosophy at CSUN, then called San Fernando Valley State College, and I taught there continuously for thirty-five years.

At the end of the spring semester in 1999 I retired from full-time teaching and was made an emeritus member of the Philosophy Department. Nevertheless in 1999-2000, as a part-time lecturer, I taught one section each semester of an introductory philosophy course so that I could explore the use of such Internet teaching tools as online quizzes, HyperNews discussion boards, and IRC virtual office hours.

Beginning to feel, however, like a professorial dinosaur lumbering among today's student mammals, at the end of the spring semester, 2000, I abandoned all teaching duties, including sponsorship of the Student Philosophy Club. Now my interest in computers and internet technology is devoted to developing my current Web site and using the technology to help the Center for Ethics and Values promote objective information and critical thinking in the public debate of ethical and aesthetic values.

During the early years of my teaching career, my wife and I had a daughter Donna (born, 1962) and a son Steven (born, 1964). Unhappily, I became divorced in 1977 and have not remarried. My children are now grown up and living away from home, and I have met a wonderful woman, Ruth, with whom I now live in the Canyon Country area of Santa Clarita, California.
