Judy Ahrens: Back to Basics or Bust?
While the November 7th election is already more than a week behind us the re-counting in Florida continues, and the ballot results remain, decidedly, undecided. As officials in Florida seek to discover the "will of the people" there, in Westminster we are watching to see if the will of the people here is served by the Westminster School Board.
This year's race for two open seats yielded few surprises. The incumbent Helena Rutkowski, held her seat, taking 8,815 votes. Jo-Ann Purcell took 7,832 votes finishing in second place. Both candidates were favored by the Westminster Teachers Association, according to campaign finance documents available at the Registrar of Voters office in Santa Ana. Finishing the race in third place at her second attempt for Westminster School Board was Judy Ahrens. Her "Back to Basics", grass roots efforts earned 5,715 votes. In the 1998 election Judy finished runner-up in fourth place. Here's where the "will of the people" issue arises.
In the coming weeks the Westminster School Board will be selecting, by appointment, their choice to fill a seat on this board- a seat that will vacate upon the resignation of Lynn Covey. Will the Westminster School Board do the right thing? Most would argue that given the outcome of the election, the will of the people of Westminster would best be served by appointing Judy Ahrens to the School Board.
