The first record of Robert is when his marriage bond was posted 10 Oct 1838 in Warren Co., VA. The bond identifies Rebecca's father as William Watson. Robert married Rebecca 11 Oct 1838 in Warren Co., VA. The person performing the ceremony was Thomas Buck.
Thomas Buck was the pastor of the Old School Happy Creek Baptist Church of Front Royal and probably also preached at the Waterlick Baptist Church on the North Fork of the Shenandoah River in Warren Co., VA (@1).
Robert is in the 1840 census of Front Royal, Warren Co., VA (20-30 yrs old). Robert appears with his wife and children in the 1850 census Warren Co., VA (42 yrs old) as a laborer owning no property. Robert is in the 1860 census of Front Royal, Warren Co., VA (49 yrs old) with his wife, children, and father-in-law William Watson. The 1860 census lists Robert as a blacksmith owning no real estate and $100 personal property.
Robert is in the 1870 census of Warrenton, Fauquier Co., VA (62 yrs old) with his family, again as a blacksmith with no real estate. Robert and family are in the 1880 census of Front Royal, Warren Co., VA (65 yrs old). This census indicates his parents were born in VA.
The census's provide a birth range for Robert between 1808 and 1815, in VA. The census data puts Rebecca's birth between 1826 and 1831. Her birthdate was estimated assuming she was 18 when she married.
According to the family records of Martha Smith of Niles, MI Robert and Rebecca are buried in a small cemetery on Sheltertop Mtn, just outside of Linden, VA. Martha has been unable to locate the cemetery.
Martha's mother recalls her grandmother Sallie (Martha Ellen Mauck, Robert's daughter) as saying Robert worked for Rebel or Yankee, money was money.
Robert appears in the personal property tax lists of Warren Co., VA for the first time in 1839. Robert appears yearly in the Warren Co. tax lists 1839-1845, Shenandoah Co. 1846 and 1847, then back in Warren Co. 1848-1850.
The only other Mauck families in the Warren Co. tax lists 1836-1850 were those of Abigail Mauck, Jonas Mauck (son of Abigail), George Mauck, and Joseph Mauck.
Abigail Shambaugh (b. abt 1801) married Jacob Mauck (b. 1788/1789 VA), son of Daniel Mauck and Rebecca Baker, in Frederick Co., VA in 1819. Jacob died before 1832, leaving Abigail, and later their son Jonas, to appear in the census and tax lists. Jacob and Abigail's marriage was too late, and Abigail too young, to have been the parents of Robert. Jacob's ancestors and their descendants are well documented, and Robert does not appear in any of their records.
George Mauck (b. 1780-1784 VA/PA) married Elizabeth Mourer in Shenandoah Co. in 1803. George appears in the census and personal property tax lists of Shenandoah Co. starting in 1804, and yearly until the formation of Warren Co. in 1836. Of interest is the census records show numerous children living with George in the 1810, 1820 and especially 1830 census, but only two of them have been identified, Sarah Mauck who married William Dellinger in Warren Co., VA 1836, and William Mauck who married Mary Jane Huffman in Warren Co., VA 30 Dec 1862.
George Mauck remarried to Edith Winfield in Shenandoah Co. in 1832, and appears in the personal property tax lists of Warren Co. yearly from 1836-1850, and the census 1840-1860.
In the Shenandoah Co. tax lists for 1832, 1833, 1834 and the Warren Co. tax list for 1836, George Mauck appears with 2 white males over the age of 16. All other years he has only one white male, himself. Robert appears in the tax lists for the first time in 1839. In 1843 both Robert and George were visited by the taxman the same day. In 1844 Robert was enumerated 26 Mar and George 27 Mar. In 1848, after his return from Shenandoah Co., Robert appears adjacent George Mauck in the tax lists, which also occurs in 1849 and 1850. In the 1850 census of Warren Co. Robert Mauck was enumerated 12 homes from George Mauck.
The birth of Robert's son Marcus Clinton is listed in the Warren Co., birth register 12 Aug 1865 adjacent the record of birth for Mary Helen Mauck, daughter of Joseph Alexander Mauck/Mock and his 2nd wife Ann Jackson. This register is listed in chronological order by date reported, not date of birth, indicating the possibility Robert and Joseph went together to report the birth of their children.
Joseph Mauck (b. abt 1822 VA) appears for the first time when he married his first wife, Mary Conner, 1843 in Warren Co., VA. They were married by T.D. Herndon, who was a Baptist minister who frequently visited the Front Royal Baptist Church. Joseph is listed in the 1850 census in Fauquier Co., and 1860 census of Warren Co., living in the Linden area.
Joseph's parents are also not known, but he and Robert share a few common traits. Both were poor and never owned property, neither did George Mauck. Both were married by Baptist ministers. Both named their first born sons George. With the exception of Jacob and Abigail Mauck, the only other Mauck family in Warren Co. was George Mauck (for further on these families, refer to their notes within this work).
For a short time, another Mauck passed through Warren Co., VA. This was Marcus Mauck (b. 1821-1835 in VA). Marcus reported the birth of two of his children in the birth records of Warren Co., VA in the mid-1850's. Marcus moved quite frequently, appearing in the 1850 census of Frederick Co., VA and 1860 census of Shenandoah Co., VA, finally settling in the Colombia Furnace area of Shenandoah Co., on Stoney Creek near Three Mile Mountain. Marcus's parents are also not known. He too was poor and owned no property, and his first born son was named George.
There is no proof positive that George Mauck was Robert's father, but it would appear it's a good liklihood. More research needs to be conducted before this conclusion is drawn. The above information is provided as an investigative lead for further research.
There is one other connection worth note. George's son George (b. 1847) married Rosa B. Marston (b. 1865) in Shenandoah Co. 19 Dec 1886. Rosa was the daughter of William Thomas Marston (b. 1835) and Susan Mauck (b. 1835), who were married 5 Aug 1857 in Page Co., VA. Susan was the daughter of Henry Mauck (b. 1804) and Margaret Aleshire. Henry Mauck was the son of David Mauck and Sally Stroup. David Mauck was the brother of the above Jacob Mauck who married Abigail Shambaugh, both David and Jacob were sons of Daniel Mauck and Rebecca Baker.
Henry Mauck and Margaret Aleshire had a son named James Harvey Mauck (b. 1829), who married Mary Catharine Marston (b. 1833) in 1852 in Page Co., VA. Mary was the sister of William who married Susan Mauck. James Harvey Mauck died in 1865, and his wife Mary Catharine Mauck (Marston) remarried to John Sine in Shenandoah Co. in 1866. In the 1860 census of Shenandoah Co., John Sine lived with the above Marcus Mauck.
