Notes:
The first record of Mathias was when he appears as a chain carrier in a Northern Neck of Virginia survey dated 02 Jan 1764 (@1) when Daniel Mauck had 283 acres surveyed on Little Run, a drain of the south fork of the Shenandoah River. The same day Mathias also appears as a chain carrier in the survey of 240 acres on the east side of the south fork of the Shenandoah River for Martin Coffman. This land was adjacent the above land and Christian Maggot. Daniel Mauck lived adjacent Christian Maggot and Martin Coffman (@1). Daniel's daughter Elizabeth Mauck married Abraham Pence, having a son Jacob Pence. Jacob Pence married Maria Coffman, daughter of Martin Coffman. Chain carriers were usually strong minors (the chains were heavy) who were related to the people for whom the survey was being done, as they worked for free. Mathias's birth year is estimated assuming he probably would have been at a minimum, 13 years old, when he carried the chains for these surveys.
In the book 18th Century Perspective of Culpeper Co., VA by Mary Jones, she quotes from Signer's 1770's petitions stating Mathias was a Culpeper Minuteman. In 1781 the Federal Government called for most Virginia Counties to provide soldiers for the War against England. These soldiers were drafted from the ranks of the local county militias. In the book, Culpeper Classes of Militiamen Selected to Serve under General Lafeyette in the Continental Army in 1781, Mathias Mauk appears as having been drafted and sent to serve with Lafeyette's Army.
Mathias appears in the following deeds from Culpeper Co., VA: 16 Mar 1772 Mathias and his wife Barbary sold 12 acres to Adam Cook(@1), 1774 they sold 111 acres Michael Cook (@2), 20 Sep 1779 they sold 25 acres to Fisher Rice (@3), 20 Sep 1779 they purchased 12 acres from Fisher Rice and his wife Agness (this land being adjacent Fisher Rice) (@4), 18 Oct 1779 they sold 157 acres to Elijah Berry (@5). The deeds do not provide a description of the property that would indicate exactly where it was, saying only that they lived in Brumfield Parish. The deed(s) for the original purchase of all the land they sold has not been located and may have been granted from the owner of Brumfield Parish, the Brumfield Parish land grants having been lost.
In a Northern Neck Land Grant dated 24 Aug 1774 Mathias was a chain carrier in the survey of 24 acres on the Robinson River for Fisher Rice (@1). In another grant 13 Sep 1775, Mathias is listed as an adjacent property owner of Fisher Rice (@1). Fisher Rice's land is described as being on the south side of the Robinson river in Culpeper Co.
Mathias appears in the personal property tax lists of Culpeper Co., VA from 1782-1790. In 1788 & 1789 there are 2 males over 16 years listed for Mathias, and in 1789 and 1790 the tax list indicates "and son". In the property tax lists and deeds Mathias's name is spelled variously as Mauk, Mauck, and Mock. The only other Mauck in these lists was Abraham Mauck, who started appearing there in 1790, and in that year was adjacent Mathias. This Abraham was the son of Daniel Mauck and Barbara Harnsberger.
Daniel Mauck also owned land on the Robinson River in Brumfield Parish, Culpeper Co., and was probably related to Mathias, possibly a brother. Of interest is Daniel Mauck's wife Barbara Harnsberger's brother Stephen Harnsberger Jr. went to Wilkes Co., GA in 1793.
In the 1793 and 1794 tax lists of Wilkes Co., GA, Mathias was taxed for 133 acres on Kettle Creek, and for having one white male. A Rudy Mock also appears in the 1794 Wilkes Co., GA Tax list, with one white male. This Rudy was possibly Mathias's son. See Rudy's notes for further.
Mathias appears in the tax digest of Wilkes Co., GA in 1801.
On 28 Oct 1801 Mathias received 190 acres in Wilkes Co., GA from Joel Early of Greene Co., GA as a gift of love and affection. In the will of Jeremiah Early in Culpeper Co., VA dated 16 Jan 1786 and proven 19 Feb 1787, Jeremiah identified his children as Joel, Jacob, Joshua, Joseph dec'd, Jeremiah dec'd, Sarah Kirtley, Ann Rogers and Hannah Scott (@7). Jeremiah Early's estate sale in Culpeper Co., VA 17 Dec 1787 lists Mathias Mank as a buyer.
In the GA Land Lottery of 1803 Mathias Mauck Sr. qualified for 2 draws. To qualify for this lottery Mathias had to be a resident of the state for at least 12 months. To receive 2 draws he had to be a free white male with a wife and one or more legitimate children. The land in this lottery was located in Wayne, Wilkinson, and Baldwin counties (@8). T actual drawing took place in 1805. Mathias Mauk Sr. and Mathias Mauk Jr., both of Wilkes Co., GA, received draws. Neither drew prizes.
On 27 Jun 1804 Mathias signed a Chattels Agreement with his son Mathias Jr., giving Mathias Jr. his estate of both real and personal property in return for Mathias Jr. caring for his mother and father as long as both shall live. On 05 Dec 1804 Mathias sold his land in Wilkes Co., GA that he had received from Joel Early, to Elijah Deering.
Mathias appears in the tax digest of Wilkes Co., GA in 1805. Mathias also appears in the 1805 tax list of Wilkes Co., GA.
In the 1806 GA Land Lottery for land in Baldwin and Wilkinson counties Barbary Mauk is listed as a widow and received 1 draw. She also received a second draw as the trustee for the orphans of Mathias Mauk dec'd (@8). To be eligible for this lottery Barbary had to be 21 years old and a resident of GA for at least 3 years. This record does not indicate if she actual won land. This lottery finally took place in 1807 and was for land in Baldwin and Wilkinson Counties.
Barbara appears in the tax digest of Wilkes Co., GA in 1809.
Barbara released to her son Mathias Mauk Jr. her dower right to 123 acres on Kettle Creek where she and Mathias Mauk Sr. resided, this land being conveyed to Elijah Deering 7 Jul 1813 (@8). This source does not indicate the date she released the land to Mathias Jr., and states that Mathias Jr. conveyed this land to Elijah Deering. This source also identifies Barbara as the widow of Mathias and that she remarried to Jacob Hindley. Jacob and Barbara Hindley signed this document. It was Witnessed by Theodore Montford, who also was the executor of the estate of Rachel Mauk, Mathias's daughter.
Jacob Hindley's Wilkes Co., GA will was dated 31 May 1816 and proved 7 Sep 1818, and identifies his wife and sole heir as Barbara (@9). In the 1794 tax digest of Wilkes Co., GA Jacob Hindley was listed as owning land on Kittle Creek.
