Notes:
Marcus appears in the 1850 census of Frederick Co., VA (25 yrs) living with the John Bowen family, as a laborer. In 1850 Delilah was enumerated with her parents, Henry and Elizabeth Fry, in Shenandoah Co., VA. The census provided her parents birth data. The bond for the marriage of Henry Fry to Elizabeth Monnham was obtained in Shenandoah Co., VA 13 Jun 1825. The bondsman was William Scott.
Marcus and Delilah's marriage in 1851 appears in the Shenandoah Co., VA marriage records. Marcus's last name in this record was spelled Mock. The date provided is the date of the marriage bond. The minister never did a marriage return to provide the date. Her father gave his consent in person.
In the Warren Co., VA death records the death of an infant of Marcus and Delilah is reported by Marcus has having occured 07 Nov 1855 in Warren Co., the child's birth being Sep 1855. In the birth records of Warren Co., VA Marcus and Delilah had born to them a female 09 Sep 1858. This daughter is not named in the records and it is not known what happened to her.
In the 1860 census of Ford Furnace, Powell's Fort District, Shenandoah Co., VA Marcus (38 yrs) was living with the Julian Miller family. Marcus's occupation was listed as a Millwright. Delilah was living with her parents and 4 of her and Marcus's children.
According to "Shenandoah Co., Virginia: A Study of the 1860 census" Vol II by Marvin J. Vann, Marcus was involved in the construction of several of the furnaces in Shenandoah Co., which often kept him away from his family for extended periods of time.
Marcus enlisted in the confederacy 03 Jun 1861 and served with Co. C of the 3rd VA Infantry. According to National Archives Military Records, Marcus was wounded at Manassas 30 Aug 1862 and did not return to his unit until Dec 1862. Marcus was taken prisoner at Spotsylvania Courthouse 20 May 1864. Marcus was sent to Point Lookout Prison in MD 23 May 1864 and transferred to Elmira, NY in July 1864. Marcus was released from Elmira 17 May 1865. This information also appears in "Shenandoah Men in Gray" Vol I by Thomas Spratt and the above book by Marvin Vann.
Marcus (39 yrs) and Delilah appear together in the 1870 census of Edinburg, Madison District, Shenandoah Co., VA. In the 1880 census Marcus (49 yrs) and Delilah are listed in Hardy Co., VA.
In the 1871 Shenandoah Co., VA marriage record of their son George, Marcus's name is Marcus A. Mauck. The 1881 marriage record of Marcus and Delilah's daughter, Savannah, indicates she was married in her father's home in Wardensville, WV.
In 1900 Marcus (b. Jun 1832) and Delilah appear in the Madison District of Shenandoah Co., VA. The 1900 census indicates Marcus's father was born in PA and his mother in VA. Delilah is shown to be the mother of 12 children, 9 of which were living.
Marcus's obituary appears in the Shenandoah Herald on March 23, 1906. The article states he died at the age of 80 at home on Stoney Creek and speaks of his service in the Civil War and his marksmanship. Delilah filed a widow's pension application that provides Marcus's date of death of 11 Mar 1906 and the cause as old age.
Delilah appears in the 1910 census of Shenandoah Co., VA with her daughter's family (Laura Cook). The census states that she had a total of 13 children, 9 of which were still living.
Marcus and Delilah are buried together in the Coffman cemetery approx. 1 mile west of Columbia Furnace, Shenandoah Co., VA. Marcus's metal headstone indicates he was born in 1821 and died in 1905, conflicting with the above data. The pension application death date was used as it is likely it was more accurate.
Delilah's death certificate provided her parents, occupation, death information, burial date and her birth location. The information on the death certificate was provided by her son, Theadore Mauck "of Edinburg". Delilah's headstone, a metal marker, indicates she was born in 1833 and died in 1917.
Marcus and Delilah's family appear in the book "Descendant's of Marcus A. Mauck 1821-1905 and Henry Fry 1800-1870" by Maxwell and Mabel Miller. This book's data sometimes conflicted with data from official records, so it was not used for this work.
Of interest is that in the 1860 census when Marcus resided with the Julian Miller family a John Sine also resided with them, as another laborer. John Sine married Mary Catherine Marston Mauck 22 Mar 1866 in Shenandoah Co., VA. Mary was the daughter of Joseph Marston and Hannah Epley, and had first married James Harvey Mauck 17 Jun 1852(@1). Harvey Mauck and Mary appear in the 1860 census of Shenandoah Co., VA. with several children. James Harvey Mauck was the son of Henry and Margaret Mauck. Henry Mauck married Margaret Eleshite in Shenandoah Co., VA 28 Jul 1828. Henry Mauck was the son of David Mauck and Sally Stroup, David being the son of Daniel Mauck and Rebecca Baker. Also of interest is that Henry Mauck and Margaret Eleshite had a daughter, Susan Mauck, who married William Thomas Marston in Page Co., VA 05 Aug 1857. William was the son of Joseph Marston and Hannah Epley. William and Susan had a daughter, Rosa Marston, who married George Mauck, son of Robert and Rebecca Mauck of Warren Co., VA.
Mike McCormick, a descendant of Marcus and Delilah, is in possession of a 3x5 card given to him by his mother that indicates Marcus was the son of John and Bettey Mauck, and that his siblings were John, Robert, and William. Mike's mother received the card from a Clifford Racey in approx. 1973. Attempts to locate Clifford Racey discovered he is since deceased. Mike also indicates Marcus and Delilah died in the home of Laura Mauck and her husband Jim Cooke. Mike mother, Mrs. McCormick of Strasburg, VA, as of 1996 owns the property on which Marcus and Delilah had their home, which is very near where they are buried. The lane that accesses this property is named Mauck Lane, and is one mile due west of Columbia Furnace. The cemetery where they are buried is on a hillside above and north of the creek that runs through the property.
In the 1850 census of Warren Co., VA there appear two William Maucks, one age 20 yrs and the 2nd age 30 yrs, both born in VA. One of these two (unknown which) was the son of George Mauck of Warren Co., VA. It is not known if the 2nd William was in fact a 2nd William, or George's William being enumerated twice, with the wrong age indicated. Also in the 1850 census of Warren Co., VA is the above Robert Mauck, who first appears when he married Rebecca Watson in Warren Co., VA in 1838. Robert's parents are not known. Robert and William would have been in Warren Co., VA at the time Marcus was reporting the birth and death of two of his children.
If Marcus's parents were John and Betty, one possibility is the John Mauck who married Elizabeth Helsley in Shenandoah Co., VA 28 Apr 1812. Their marriage record identifies her father as Peter Helsley. Elizabeth's birth 20 Mar 1793 appears in the records of the Lutheran Zion-Pine Church of Stoney Creek (@2). John and Elizabeth had a son named Levi whose birth 04 Jul 1814 is also reported in the same church records. John Mauck is listed as a buyer at the estate sale of Jacob Helsley in 21 Feb 1814 (@3), Jacob being Elizabeth's grandfather. One of the witnesses to Jecob Helsley's Will dated 21 Nov 1811 and proved 07 Feb 1814 (@4) was George Mock. This is the same George Mauck that appears in Warren Co., VA 1850-1860 (the same time as Marcus, William and Robert), and who was probably a brother of John Mauck. Peter Helsley's Will dated 20 Oct 1849 and proved 12 Jun 1854 (@5) states his daughter "Elizabeth Mocks" was deceased and of Ohio, then leaves money to her heirs, but does not name them. In a Shenandoah Co., VA probate dated 09 May 1857 (@6) record of this payment is shown, but again the heirs of Elizabeth are not named. Of interest is that Delilah's sister Elizabeth Fry married Washington Helsley, son of Joseph Helsley, in 1858. This Joseph Helsley was probably Joseph, son of Peter Helsley. Peter Helsley and his father Jacob lived several miles west of Columbia Furnace in Shenandoah Co., VA. No other record of John and Elizabeth Mauck, or their son Levi, have been located (including census records).
