Notes:
The first record of Joseph was when his marriage bond was posted by a Neverson Smith 30 Jan 1843 in Warren Co., VA. Mary's father, Elsea Conner, gave his consent in writing. The marriage bond spells Joseph's last name as Mock.
Joseph married Mary Francis Conner 5 May 1843 in Warren Co., VA, The minister was T.D. Herndon. Their marriage appears in the Warren Co., VA marriage records. The spelling of Joseph's surname appears as Mauck.
Traverse D. Herndon was a minister with the Long Branch Baptist Church in Fauquier Co., VA (@1 & @2). He traveled a circuit that included Front Royal. Traverse was one of the organizing elders of the Front Royal Missionary Baptist Church in April 1839. It is possible that Joseph and Mary were married at this church.
The marriage of Mary's parent's, Elsea Conner and Eliza Saffell, appears in the Fauquier Co. marriage records 20 Oct 1824, which, along with census data, provided Mary's estimated date of birth as being after 1824.
The death certificate of George Robert Mauck, son of Joseph and Mary, indicates he was born in Warren Co., VA in 1846.
On 16 Nov 1848 in Warren Co., VA Joseph A. Mock witnessed the marriage bond for John Williams and Maranda Price. John was the son of Presley Williams, Maranda was the daughter of Jonathan Price. Also witnessing the bond was Washington Mills. John and Maranda were married the same day by Alfred G. Chenowith, a Methodist minister (@2).
Joseph and Mary next appear in the 1850 census of the Ashby District, Fauquier Co., VA near Mary's family. Joseph was employed as a cooper. In this and every other census Joseph's last name is spelled Mock.
The Fauquier Co., VA marriage record of Fannie Mauck, daughter of Joseph and Mary, indicates she was born in Fauquier Co., VA in 1854.
Joseph and Mary's children begin appearing in the Warren Co. Birth records in January 1856 and continue through 1860. The spelling of the surname in all of the birth and death records was Mauck.
Joseph and Mary appear in the 1860 census of Linden, Warren Co., VA. Joseph again is employed as a cooper.
During the Civil War Joseph served with the Confederacy in the VA 146th Militia Co. H, 1st Regt, 7th Brigade. He enlisted 11 Feb 1861 in Front Royal, Warren Co., VA and was listed AWOL 16 Oct 1861. Mary died between 1861 and 1863 and this may have been the reason Joseph went AWOL.
In July 1865 Joseph appears in the birth register of Warren Co., VA as the father of Mary Helen Mauck. Mary's mother is identified as Ann. In the 1870 census of Centreville, Fairfax Co., VA Joseph and Ann appear with several of Joseph and Mary's children, and several of Joseph and Ann's children. Joseph was employed as a farmer.
Joseph appears in the personal property tax lists of Fairfax Co., VA yearly from 1870 through 1876. In the tax list of 1874 he is listed as living near Bull Run. The lists show that he owned horses, cattle, hogs and a wagon or carriage. Examining the 1870 and 1880 census neighbors of Joseph and his wife Ann, and comparing them to the people listed on an 1878 map of Fairfax Co., it appears Jospeh lived several miles south of Centreville above Bull Run, and Ann in 1880 lived approx. two miles northeast of Centerville.
In June 1879 John Mohler was appointed administrator for Joseph A. Mock dec'd. Sureties were posted by Thomas Moore(@7). According to the 1870 census John Mohler was a farmer who resided in Fairfax Co.
A series of court records from 1879 through 1882 show the administration of Joseph's estate being continued. Finally, on 16 Nov 1882 the case was dismissed "with leave to Mr. Meredith to re-instate should he think proper to do so" (@8). It is not known which Meredith in Fairfax Co. this was, or his relationship with Joseph, if there was a relationship other than being appointed to some official function having to do with Joseph's estate. Since Joseph apparently owned no land and only personal property, by 1882 his estate could have been literally consumed by the family.
In 1880 Ann appears in the census of Centreville, Fairfax Co., VA as a widow with 8 children, the youngest being 4 years old.
Ann appears with her parents, Dempsey Jackson and Elizabeth Rogers, in the 1850 census of Middletown, Frederick Co., VA. The census provided her birthdate. Joseph and Ann's marriage is estimated as being 1 year before the birth of their first child.
The Fairfax Co., VA death certificate of Joseph and Ann's son Charles Minor Mock indicates Ann's maiden name of Jackson and that she was born in White Post, Clarke Co., VA. Ann's parents are identified as Dempsie Jackson and "Rodgers" in the Fairfax Co., VA death certificate of Joseph's son George, who married Ann's sister Mary Catherine Jackson.
In 1873 Demsey Jackson resided in a home with a shop and house used as a school, near Stone Bridge, Clarke Co., VA (@3). Demsey rented this home from a William Pagett.
The death certificates of Joseph's children George and Charles indicate their father was born in Clarke Co., VA. Clarke Co., VA was formed from Frederick Co., VA in 1836 (Joseph was abt. 14 yrs old at the time).
The birth information of Joseph, Mary, their children, and Ann and Joseph's children was obtained from the census if it was not provided by the Warren Co., VA birth or death register.
The parents of Joseph have not been proven. There are several possibilities, the most likely being that Joseph was the son of George Mock and Elizabeth Mourer. Census info indicates George was born abt. 1780-1784 in either PA or VA. He first appears when he married Elizabeth 10 Dec 1803 in Shenandoah Co., VA. George appears yearly in the personal property tax lists of Shenandoah Co., VA from 1803 thru 1836, when Warren Co. was formed from parts of Frederick and Shenandoah Co. George then appears in the personal property tax lists of Warren Co. thru 1850, and in the 1850 and 1860 census of Warren Co., VA. It is assumed that Elizabeth died before 1832, as George remarried to Edith Winfield 13 Nov 1832 in Shenandoah Co.
In the 1830 census George and Elizabeth had ten children in their household. Only one or two of these have been accounted for. One was Sarah Mauck who married William Dellinger 8 Sep 1836 in Warren Co., VA. The second was probably William Mauck who married Mary Jane Huffman 30 Dec 1862 in Warren Co. Census info indicates William was born between 1830 and 1832. His headstone indicates he was born in 1821.
The records of Warren Co., VA list several other Mauck's whose parents have not been identified and may have been the children of George and Elizabeth: Robert Mauck who married Rebecca Ann Watson in Warren Co., VA 11 Oct 1838, and Marcus Mauck who married Delilah Fry 7 Apr 1851 in Shenandoah Co., VA. Of interest is the first born son of the families of Robert, Marcus and Joseph was named George, and in Joseph's case, George Robert.
Another very remote possibility for Joseph's parents are Jacob Mauck who married Abigail Shambaugh 24 Mar 1817 in Frederick Co., VA. Jacob was the son of Daniel Mauck and Rebecca Baker (@4). Daniel's family lived in the area of Luray in what became Page Co., VA. Abigail appears in the 1830 census of Frederick Co., VA and 1840 and 1850 census of Warren Co., VA. Her father, Daniel Shambaugh (@5), lived on Crooked Run just north of Front Royal (@6). Jacob and Abigail had two children, Jonas H. Shambaugh Mauck who married Barbara Ann Baker before 1847, and Catharine Mauck who married Baylis Derflinger 21 Dec 1843 in Warren Co., VA. In a Warren Co., VA guardian bond in 1843 (@7) Baylis was appointed Catharine's guardian and the record states her father was deceased. The families of Abigail, Jonas and Catharine appear in numerous deed records in Warren Co., VA. Joseph appears in none of these records, so was likely not from this family.
Yet another possibility is that Joseph descended from David Mock and Mary Ann Butler, who lived in what became Page Co., VA. David and Mary were married 28 Feb 1795 in Fauquier Co., VA, and other than Joseph and the above Robert, are the only Mauck/Mock family in the records of Fauquier Co., VA. Several of David and Mary's children were employed as cooper's, and Joseph was listed as a cooper in several of the census. The name Joseph is quite common in this line, but David and Mary probably had a son named Joseph, who married Mary Ann Moyers in Page Co., VA 15 Dec 1840.
