One of the strongest voices for adoptee rights is Bastard Nation. Though their name may seem offensive to some, their intentions and results are the backbone of the movement. There are other groups that support adoptee rights such as The American Adoption Congress, the California based adopteerights.org, Adam Pertman’s Adoption Institute, and my own Adoptees’ Caucus for Truth. Ann Wilmer’s website, Green Ribbon Campaign has also been around for quite some time. She encourages adoptee rights awareness through her website and features a number of links to Search Angels (people who typically volunteer their services to assist adoptees in search). Her site also features adoption laws in all of the states and “green thumb” ratings on pending legislation. The Green Ribbon campaign began initially to bring focus to the numbers of adoptees who were dying of terminal illnesses and misdiagnoses - unfortunate tragedies that might have been averted if only physicians had access to the true, biological medical histories of the adoptees they were treating. Unfortunately, there are many adoptive parents who fail to ever let their adopted children know that they were adopted. This paves the way for potential medical tragedy regarding adoptees who never discover the truth, and psychiatric issues for those who find out later in life, known by the term: “late discovery adoptees”. Late discovery adoptee and activist, Ron Morgan has an L.D.S. page at www.adopting.org |
