Hi im Denise is the baby in the nest by it's self?? i didnt see the parent's
Date: Sunday, August 22, 2004
Time: 05:39 PM
Yes Denise, unfortunatly there was only 1 hatchling out of 3 eggs. The parents do come in the nest to feed the chick and give it warmth. Although less frequently since it is about 14 days old. The parents have started to sleep outside the nest (expected) and so you will see them less frequently1

Hey Denise, I really couldn't tell. I stepped out all day yesterday and returned to find the chick on the floor last night sleeping. So I don't know if it accidently fell or not. Anyway I place the chick on top of the soil in a potted plant in the aviary and it slept there all night. This morning it was still on the floor of the aviary somehere else but not perching on some wooden dowels I placed low on the cage. I guess it still hasn't learned to fly yet.
I then placed it back in the open canary nest and it perched right on the edge of the canary nest (which is good as that confirms feet okay and it has learned to perch) and saw DAD fly over and feed the chick (good Daddy).
So right now if you look at the cam , baby is in the canary nest perching.
Hopefully it will fledge the next couple of days!

Hi! I've been keeping an eye on this cam since its inception and I just love it. It has been so much fun watching the young one grow up. I have zebra finches and a lineolated parakeet, and I'd love to set up my own webcame sometime. The site has much improved since the beginning, too. Good work. :)

Thanks so much Erin. I appreciate your comments. It has been a eye opening experience as this is my first hatching (gouldians no less!) and just watching nature at work is incredible. Right now, the fledgling is trying to learn how to hull seeds and it is a joy watching it do it. I hope my zebras (which are too young right now) will have successfull hatching/rearing experience when the time comes and currently I am crossing my fingers that my cordon bleus will have a good hatching! They have been sitting on eggs for over a week now! Hope to get some pics up when that happens!

Hi Vinman, I had to remove all 6 of my gouldian egg's from the pair. they were not sitting at all.I put them in the society nest. they have egg in there of their own Do you think she will continue to lay egg's? Denise DEEBEBLONDE007@msn.com
Date: Thursday, September 30, 2004
Time: 01:10 PM
Denise she will continue to lay eggs if the original eggs are gone. Although check her beak, it must be still dark for her to be in breeding mode. Just make sure she gets enough calcium (my primary source is freshly boiled egg shells). I have never had any of my finches not go right after eggs shells after i place them in . If she see that she is getting enough calcium she will starting laying again. Although fertilization is another question. The pair will have to start mating again for fresh sperm to be stored in the female while she develops the eggs. It might take some time. Do you have your pair seperated? I find it makes the pair concentrate better on the task at hand. I am lucky my pair are tight sitters. They have not let up since 11 days ago! My six eggs are bout to hatch anyday now as the male is also spending alot of nest time with the hen! I took up the challenge with my zebra chicks of handfeeding them. If you have a worst case scenario and the societies reject the g. chicks go to handfeeding. It's really not that bad once you gain experience. My one zebra chick died because the original zebra parents were not feeding them. I managed to save the remaining chick by emergency handfeeding and placing it back into the care of my societies!
Beware I have read that once societies start to rear their own or another species, they may lock in on the mouth pattern of what they are used to and reject the others so be watchful for when the g. chicks hatch that they are being fed also!

I have seen it go down to the 40s and the finches seem to keep it in stride. If they are incubating chicks then I will pull them indoors which is kept at about mid 70s at night to mid 80's daytime. Thanks for asking! I am currently hand feeding a single cordon bleu chick at the moment!

Thanks for sharing your birds with everyone. I've kept/raised Society and Zebra finches in the past, but am down to one Zebra pair at the moment. They are now raising their first clutch... so far, three of the four peeps are alive and doing well.
Will stop back in now and then to see what's new!
