Wire Crochet Tips

First, let me say that I am not the expert on this craft. There are lots of books and other websites with much better info than I have. I'll try to gather some of them for my links in the future.

Meanwhile here is what I know:
Use 28 gauge wire. In my opinion, 30 is too fine and will break, 26 is too hard on the hands.

Use a steel crochet hook in one of the "teeny-tiny" sizes used to make cotton lace (sorry I don't know the sizes - I just eyeball them!).

Practice with copper wire - it's cheap.

Wire crochet does not look like yarn crochet - it looks more free-form and the stitches are not as neat - that's just how it is, you need to get used to that look if you do a lot of yarn crochet.

I only use chains and single crochet - no fancy stitches; and practice without beads first.

Practice, practice, practice - it's difficult even for experienced yarn crocheters.

Adding beads is just like adding beads to yarn crochet and there are lots of sites and books for that too.

I hope this helps - the most important advice is: practice and don't give up.

Chunky Turquoise

What could be trendier!

This bracelet has 5 chunky turquoise beads and a bunch of turquoise chips for accents. It's about 2 inches wide and makes quite an impact!

Sterling Silver Wire Crochet and Semiprecious Stone Necklace

Mossy Agate Pi Necklace

For the Ancient Chinese, the Pi shape (flattened doughnut shape) symbolized heaven and the sky.

For us, it is an elegant, pleasing shape that lends itself well to jewelry from simple to elaborate.

This necklace is constructed by crocheting sterling silver wire and glass beads with a Mossy Agate Pi stone.

It is 24 inches long, and slips over the head.

Here's a closeup showing the matte green glass beads that complement the stone:

Note the beautiful veining in the Mossy Agate.
